Dr. Peter A. Levine is the founder and developer of Somatic Experiencing (SE™), a somatic-based, body-awareness method for healing trauma and restoring nervous-system regulation.
He holds a doctorate in Medical/Biophysical Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley, and a doctorate in Psychology from International University. Over more than five decades of clinical practice and research, he has combined neurobiology, physiology, ethology, and clinical psychology to build a trauma-healing model grounded in how the nervous system — not just the mind — processes and resolves stress and traumatic activation.
He is the Founder and President of the Ergos Institute of Somatic Education, and Founder & Senior Advisor for the global certification body Somatic Experiencing International (SEI), which oversees training of SE practitioners worldwide.
Dr. Levine is also the author of a number of internationally acclaimed books and resources for trauma healing — including the classic Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma (widely translated) and In an Unspoken Voice: How the Body Releases Trauma and Restores Goodness.
He continues to lecture and teach trauma-healing workshops globally, consult in clinical settings, and advocate for somatic-based healing and nervous-system regulation as foundational to recovery, resilience, and personal growth.
